Earlier tonight, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the LA premiere of “Before I Fall.” Adapted from Lauren Oliver’s popular YA novel, the screenplay was written by Maria Maggenti, whose past credits include the film Monte Carlo and episodes of “Without a Trace.”
The excitement in the audience was palpable at the premiere, whether the members were enthusiastic movie-goers or there to support their friends and family. “Before I Fall” stars Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Liv Hewson, Kian Lawley, Jennifer Beals, and Logan Miller.
The film tells the story of Sam, a popular girl who attends a picturesque high school in the Pacific Northwest, who seems to live a perfectly charmed life– until it turns out to be her last day. Stuck reliving the final day of her life over and over again, Sam is forced to evolve as a person and get everything right in order to reverse it.
Although the premise of “Before I Fall” may sound rather similar to that of “Groundhog Day,” the film includes several unique aspects that make the story line compelling. Despite the fact that Deutch’s character is often foul-mouthed and Sage’s character is the typical “high school mean girl,” both actresses still manage to charm and captivate the audience.
The film was directed by Ry Russo-Young, and her vision is clear from the start. All of her shots embrace cooler color tones, perfectly complementing the story’s dreary setting in the Pacific Northwest.
Both Russo-Young and Magentti manage to make the day in question seem fresh all over again and that everything is at stake, which is certainly not an easy task. The storyline convinces the audience to root for Sam, and we want her to be successful.
“Before I Fall” was distributed by Awesomeness Films, and it is their second feature film. I’m incredibly excited to see what content they produce next. I also want to give a shout out to an amazing friend and actress, Halston Sage.
Congratulations on yet another fantastic film. Run, don’t walk to see “Before I Fall”. It’s far more than the quintessential YA film– not only does it raise challenging and important questions, but it also inspires audiences to live every day to the fullest. The film will be released in theaters this Friday, March 3rd.
And now for some quick fashion notes…
At the premiere, I was wearing J-Brand leather pants, an Elizabeth & James sleeveless top, and a Victoria Beckham sequined blazer.
