5 Brilliant TV Shows You Aren’t Watching

Today, TV shows are often better and more captivating than movies in theaters. Don’t get me wrong. “Hell or High Water,” “Don’t Think Twice,” “Bad Moms,” and several other recent films have been great, but they are few and far between. Because I had a spinal fusion surgery a few weeks ago, I have had LOTS of time to watch TV.

Everyone always talks about Jon Snow on Game of Thrones or A’s mysterious identity on Pretty Little Liars or the adorable British actress on Stranger Things. Here are some new characters for you and your friends to discuss from 5 absolutely amazing TV shows that you likely aren’t watching.

1) “UNREAL”

Don’t let the fact that this absolutely brilliant TV show is on Lifetime prevent you from watching it. This drama/black comedy series premiered in 2015, starring Shiri Appleby as a young, ambitious reality TV producer who is constantly pushed by her relentless boss to throw her integrity out the window and do anything it takes to create crazy content for their “reality” dating show. Basically, UNREAL is a satire of The Bachelor. If you love The Bachelor, you will love UNREAL. If you despise The Bachelor, you’ll still love UNREAL. I watched 2 seasons within a three day time period over a long weekend. It’s that good.

2) “THE TUNNEL”

This is a pretty obscure show that pretty much no one has ever heard of unless they live in Europe. This British-French crime drama miniseries follows two detectives as they scramble to uncover why a prominent French politician was found dead on the border between France and the UK. Trust me– you will binge watch all 10 episodes in a very short amount of time.

3) “THIS IS US”

Released this fall on NBC, this new show tells the story of several people who share the same birthday, whose lives are connected in unexpected ways. Although it’s only 3 episodes in, I’m already hooked. But be warned– your tear ducts will be getting a good workout while watching THIS IS US.

4) “LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER”

John Oliver is great at taking complicated, serious issues and explaining them in a comical fashion. His new show (2 seasons in) will fill the hole Jon Stewart left in your heart.

5) “BROADCHURCH”

Frequently confused with the comedy Broadcity, this TV show is about a big murder in a small town that becomes the center of a media circus. This show is incredibly smart, addictive, and captivating.
